Double Your Pleasure,

Double your pleasure, double your fun,
Double your knitting, the ski hat is done!

Doubleknitski hat

Since this hat is double-knit, it’s totally reversible. Here’s one side:

And the reverse:

Doubleknitski hat - black side out

It has been deemed by the Pontiff to be “as good as or better than any ski hat I’ve ever owned”.

Guess he’s happy.

Oddly enough, I cast on way fewer stitches than the pattern indicated, and it was totally by accident. I didn’t realize that I didn’t have the right number of stitches until I got to the decreases at the crown, and they didn’t work out right. Fortunately, I’d had him try it on along the way, so I knew it fit OK. It’s snug on him, and could be a little larger, but I haven’t blocked it yet. He prefers it to be a bit tight anyway, since it will probably stretch out a bit over time. It’s a good thing he has a tiny head, like mine.

It should definitely be warm.

Pattern: Doubleknitski – on Ravelry here.
Yarn: Patons Classic Merino, dark gray mix and black, about 3/4 skein of each.
Needles: 4.25 mm

Ravelry: Project page

Modifications:

As I mentioned above, I cast on 120 instead of 162 for no apparent reason other than a brain fart. If I were making it again, I’d probably cast on at least another 8 stitches. As it is, it fits me pretty well, but is slightly tight for him.

I didn’t do the doubleknitting as indicated in the pattern (do each round twice, once with each color, slipping the opposite color). Instead, I worked both colors at once on each round.

I did three stripes instead of two, just because.

I increased the length by nearly 4″ – partly to provide for a cuff of about 2.5″, and partly to make the top of the hat longer (rather than have it tight against the head like a beanie).

I had to modify the decreases because I didn’t have the same number of stitches. Additionally, I worked a plain knit round between all decrease rounds, which made the top longer and smoother. I’m not sure I’d do that again, but it worked out fine.

Thank goodness he’s got a pin head!

It’s wonderful, Cheryl! You did a great job with what sounds like a questionable pattern.

    Well done!

lol. Wow, with Stacey and Cookie commenting you’d think you’d knit a willy warmer.

A fine hat. Even if I do have that stupid jingle stuck in my head now.

  8. Cayenne says:

Very nice. I’m impressed by the double knitting. I tried that once on a project several years ago and it was definitely challenging.

  9. Laurie says:

Love it! Functional, reversible, warm, handsome FO.

It’s just fantastic, and it’s going to be warm as a mofo! It’s probably great that it’s snug, because as I find with most of my knits, it no doubt will grow. I am super-impressed with the double-knitting, too. I’ve wanted to do a fine-gauge double-knitted scarf from some book I have — I love the finished look. But I’ve tried it a couple times and just cannot understand the written directions. I’ll need someone to show me. I’m sure there’s a video out there — I just need to get motivated enough to look at it.

I really like the mods, especially the fewer stitches. I would’ve second guessed 162 stitches!
