Happy dance!
I’m really pleased with my new jacket. It’s very cozy and snuggly, and I think it will get a lot of wear.
I don’t really think the photos do it justice, but it was 22° F / -5° C and my husband only has so much patience.
Pattern: Kyra, a free Berroco pattern. Ravelry page here.
Yarn: Cascade 128, Tangerine (overdyed with Susan’s help), 9 skeins
Needles: US 10/6mm and US 8/5mm
Size: Custom
Ravelry project here.
Modifications: Since I was using a bulkier yarn than called for (it calls for Aran), I knitted it slightly smaller than XS, and ended up with it measuring about halfway between S and M.
For the sleeves, I decided to pick up stitches around the armhole, shape the cap with shortrows, and knit down. This eliminated a bulkier seam, and would have let me shorten the sleeves if necessary to finish with the 9 skeins.
I think Susan’s help with the dye job must have worked some magic, and her yarn karma rubbed off on me a bit. As it turned out, I was able to make the sleeves the full length, with this much yarn leftover:
Be aware that the collar uses a LOT of yarn. I used about 2.5 skeins of yarn for the collar, compared to 2 skeins for the back.
I had originally planned to use the same ribbing at the cuffs as for the collar. (Ooooh – now I’m probably going to get a lot of hits from people searching for matching collar and cuffs. Sorry, probably not quite what you were looking for. Ahem.) Anyway, I tried it but wasn’t very happy with the result. The stitch pattern biases a lot worked flat, and even more when worked in the round, so it didn’t look very good. I just went with the plain rib as called for in the pattern. I think it’s for the best anyway, since the collar should be the focal point.
The pattern didn’t indicate whether to use the larger or smaller needles for the collar. I assumed it should probably be the smaller size, but after 1″ of that, my hands hurt too much from knitting the twisted stitches on that size needle, so I switched to the larger one. The collar is probably a little floppier than it should be because of that, but I’m happy with it anyway.
I love the Cascade 128 – it feels great and has wonderful stitch definition. It’s also very reasonably priced. It’s an excellent choice for jackets and coats.
I think this jacket would be awesome knit in Noro, too.

Next time, get him to mode the sweater. Then he’ll be warmer and more willing to stay outside. ;^)

Oh yeah – 2 inches of yarn left – SO Susan!
Looks wonderful tho. Hoping you aren’t getting the snowstorm we are, although it looks warm enough for anything winter-y.
Fabulous! You must have worked all night on that collar.
It’s beautiful, Cheryl! Pretty color on a pretty model. Sounds like you are having a warmer day than I am here. It is all the way up to 14 degrees……..brrrr…..even the pooch is in and out real quick!
