I went “shopping” in the back yard today for some carrots and herbs for tonight’s dinner.
Despite the fact that we’ve had sub-freezing temperatures and snow, my Early Girl tomato plant is still full of ripening tomatoes. The leaves have pretty much all died off, but the tomatoes are still there. The other tomato plants are gone – I cut them down over the last few days. This one’s in a slightly more protected spot, and it has so much heart, I haven’t been able to get rid of it.
Instead, I picked a big bowl of semi-ripe tomatoes to put in the basement. Maybe I’ll still get some garden-grown tomatoes to eat this year.

Or you can make fried ‘not quite’ green tomatoes!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…
They should ripen nicely in the basement.
*nom nom nom*
Wow, that is really cool.
We’ve still got some snow on our lawn…
I hope they do make it. They tried so hard.
Sadly, East Texas has had an unseasonably wet and cold September and October (as evidenced by most of the neighbor’s docks being under water right now) and mine had not a chance. Here we can do a spring crop and an autumn crop – summer ones don’t stand much of a chance – from what I’m told.
They look like they’ll be just fine after a little basement time! Yum–good!
THAT IS AMAZING!!! I bought some pesto the other day, and was wishing for one last tomato. I wonder if, with the cold, they will be less flavorful … but they certainly can’t be less flavorful than the supermarket kind. Awesome for you!!!!
