Double Needle Cast On
Published October 12, 2009 by cheryl
A friend was recently trying to figure out the instructions for the double needle cast on for the Swirl Scarf. None of us at SnB could make heads or tails of the written instructions. The cast-on is done over two needles, with the needles held in the same hand – not like a cable cast-on or knitted cast-on.
I checked my knitting technique books for this method, hoping to find some illustrations. But no luck.
The Internet came to the rescue, of course. I found a great video (or still photos, if you prefer) of the technique on the Rosemary Knits Tutorials blog, listed as the “Best Stretchy Cast On Ever”.
There are also written instructions by June Hemmons Hiatt (with illustrations) at the Knitting Universe, which can be found here. This is an excerpt from her book “The Principles of Knitting“. By the way, I hear this book is supposed to be reissued soon (Fall 2009).
Cool. One more technique to add to the arsenal.
Now go forth and cast on!

I agree those instructions were useless. Well, what did you think of it? Is there a benefit to it?
No! No more casting on until I’ve finished some projects!
)
Thanks for the tips!
Does it have another name? There are 20 pages of cast-ons in Montse Stanley’s book, but none with quite that name.
Right on. Still photos are printing this minute.
Look at that! I can’t spell my own name!
People still knit?
I was going to finish something but now that I’ve been given permission – nay, orders! to cast on, so I shall.
Just not possibly the double needle cast on but possibly the cast off. That looks pretty intriguing.
Thanks for the tip! There’s always something to learn.
And that Cookie… geez. But a spindle or a wheel in her house and she goes to town.
That cast-on looks worth its wt in gold. THanks for the link! And I am very excited to hear that the Hiatt book might be coming. For those of us who are not long long long time knitters, our libraries can seem incomplete.
