FO: Voltaire Scarf

Happiness is a new scarf, just as it starts to get cold outside.

Too bad it isn’t for me.

Instead, this handsome scarf is for a good friend, who has been asking for something hand knit for a while.

I hope he likes it.

Pattern: Voltaire Scarf, a free pattern by Ingrid King.
Yarn: Colourmart 8/28 Cashmere, colorway “bark”, less than 1 cone
Needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm
Size: About 5.5″ x 63″
Ravelry: Project page, Pattern page.

This is a really nice pattern, and the scarf has an elegant look to it. The stitch pattern is a little different on each side, but both sides look good, and it lays flat.

The stitch pattern is an 8-stitch, 2-row repeat which is simple to memorize, and should be simple to knit. However, I had trouble knitting it if I had any distractions because even though it was easy enough to look at the scarf and see where I was in the pattern, I still kept finding myself making mistakes. The stitch pattern breaks down logically into four sets of four stitches: k1 p1 k1 p1; k2 p2; k4; and a cable twist. I was forever finding myself knitting k1 p1 k1 p1 when I should have been doing either k2 p2 or k4. Then I’d have to look and see if I did the last set of 4 stitches correctly. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Of course.

With the highly textured pattern, sometimes it isn’t easy to see that you’ve made a mistake until several rows later, so I kept having to ladder down to correct a stitch here and there. And even though I kept stopping to look at it every inch or so, I would STILL miss errors and find them several inches later. Maybe it’s premature senility.

But aside from my excessive brain farts while working on this, it came out well and I’m very happy with it.

Looks good from here! I blame the knitting. It’s sneaky and it likes to have your full attention. Baby.

It’s always the simple ones that cause the most trouble. It’s lovely, though, your friend should love it!

Yeah, my brain would be farting all over with that one. It’s a great scarf, and I will add that knitting a scarf for a friend is a true labor of love – scarves take forever!

Cashmere? Honestly, how could he NOT like it? And if he doesn’t want it, I’ll be glad to find it a home!

I am, as always, glad to know I’m not the only one who has trouble with the simple things as well as the complex.

Love it! The Mr would like this one. K1P2K2P1K4K3K1 patterns always make one’s needles fart. But they look good at the end.
