WIP Wednesday

I have a good friend who has been bugging me to knit something for him for a long time, so I’m knitting both him and his wife scarves for Christmas this year.

For him, I’m using a pattern called Voltaire. I really like how it’s working up. It’s a 2-row repeat, and each row has an 8-stitch repeat. It’s easy enough to remember, and it goes quickly when I’m not distracted. But since each 8-stitch repeat is logically two 4-stitch segments, and each of the 8 4-stitch segments are different, it’s easy for me to forget where I am.

Squirrel!

Uh, where was I? Oh yes, the stitch pattern. One side alternates 1×1 rib with 2×2 rib, and the other side alternates k4 with a 4-stitch right-twist pattern. It’s easy to see where the twist pattern goes, but when I’m gabbing with someone, or get distracted — ooooh, shiny! — I look down and wonder whether I the next four stitches should be k4, k1-p1-k1-p1, or k2-p2. Then I wonder if I did the last four stitches correctly because I wasn’t paying attention, so I have to look at the stitches to check.

Sigh.

I guess this won’t be an SnB project.

While both sides are different, they’re both nice, so either side could be the “right” side:

Voltaire, Side 1

Voltaire, side 2

But I do have a knit-in-public project – the Drops 78-11 Cardigan. I’m almost done with the lacy bits and will be on to the stockinette portion shortly. Fortunately, this one is simple enough to knit even when I’m distracted.

The squirrel likes the cardigan? I like the stitch pattern of it.

Laughed out loud at the squirrel photo. Love the way that scarf is looking!!!! What’s the yarn?

When a friend begs you for a handknit, I say it HAS to be done. So few people understand the handknit gift, or appreciate it, it can be so discouraging. When someone begs you for it, THAT is the person who MUST get it — hence the blue sweater I made last year, and the thrummed mittens I made the year before, both for male (both professors, it turns out — hm, interesting coincidence) friends. I’m still working on getting enough energy to do the one my mom wants AND Ryan. Ryan is a biggie — the boy is 6’3″, and he only likes fine-gauge things. Eek. But he won’t.stop.asking. (which is extra-sweet)

The things that are holding me back from doing my mom’s is a) it’s fingering Shetland wool, which in itself I don’t mind at all, but b) I know she’ll just fold it up and put it away and never wear it (or maybe wear it ONCE) because it’s so special, dontcha know. PEOPLE! You have to WEAR the handknit gifts!!!! (my 2 prof. friends WEAR theirs, which gives me no end of glee — and Ryan wore his hat to death, AND Abigail wore through her “Snow Queen” hat and mittens.)

Oooo, you’ve been squirreled! We all need the easy knits. The yarn for that scarf is scrumptious and the color is great for a man (or woman). Very nice!

    Seriously cute. Squirrel and all.

I can’t wait to see that sweater on you, the picture doesn’t show you much of it! Doesn’t the model look like Cindy Crawford?

  7. Carrie says:

    Squirrel! AAAAAAAAAAAhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Sorry, was there knitting? i was having an Up moment.

  8. Anne says:

    Hah. Snort.

    Me too.

    What?

  9. Carrie K says:

There is a squirrel! How distracting.

Voltaire is dashing. I have that same problem with cooking – if it doesn’t take a decent amount of concentration, I tend to burn it.
