Elegant Gauntlets

Elegant GauntletsMy “Elegant Gauntlets” are finished, and I love them! I’ve been wearing them around the house since I finished them this morning. They’re nice and cozy, and a perfect fit.

Pattern:  “Elegant Gauntlets” from The Knitting Experience, Book Two: The Purl Stitch” by Sally Melville. The pattern was well-written, clear, and easy to follow.  Ravelry link

Yarn: Pagewood Farms Hand-dyed sock yarn (100% Merino Superwash), in “Really Red”. The yardage for this yarn is very generous (450 yards). I only used a little over half of the skein for the gauntlets.

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 1 (2.25 mm)

Size: The size of the gauntlets are adjusted by using different sized needles to get a larger or smaller gauge.

Modifications: I did one extra decrease for the wrist, spacing the decreases a little closer together than indicated in the pattern. I had originally planned to do two extra decrease rounds, but one was fine - and it worked out just right, because I liked the length I had without doing the extra rows I’d planned for the last decrease. Since I had 4 less stitches at the wrist, I had to do an extra set of increases for the hand. I also needed to work an extra 1/2″ after all of the thumb increases so that the thumb gusset would be in the right place, and I made the thumb 1/4″ shorter than specified in the pattern.

Notes:  I used the smaller needles for the ribbing around the hand and thumb, but cast off with the larger needles. To determine what size needle to use, I cast on 48 stitches in the round, worked a few rows of 1×1 ribbing, then some stockinette, and finished with a bit more ribbing and bound off. I slipped the swatch over my hand to see how it fit around the palm, and selected my needle size based on the swatches.
