Knittin’ Mittens
Published November 25, 2007 by cheryl
I’ve got 3 pairs of mittens knitted for the Knit Unto Others project. I’ve used 3 different patterns so far.
The tiny striped mittens are from the pattern “Child’s Simple Striped Mittens” by Sivia Harding, and are made from two colors of Wool-Ease. The dark brown stripe is some of the yarn that belonged to David, so I was pleased to use it in a project for charity. Since I wasn’t making these for a specific child, I didn’t bother to swatch. But with the specified 3.25 mm (US3) needles, I was getting 6 stitches to the inch instead of 5 as indicated in the pattern. So the mittens are quite small. Since I knit loosely, I normally go down a needle size - but in this case I’d probably have had to go up to size 3.75 (US5) to get gauge. As for the pattern itself, it’s easy, but there’s no thumb gusset, so for a better and more comfortable fit, I’d choose another pattern.
The larger taupe-colored mittens are also knitted in Wool-Ease with 3.5mm (US4) needles, using the pattern “Mittens for Children and Adults” (pattern NN106) from Sandy’s Needle Nook. This pattern has a thumb gusset which is defined by a purl stitch on each side (a nice touch), but the tops are quite pointy - something you may or may not like. I think it makes them cute, but not quite as comfortable to wear, at least on my hands.
The dark green mittens are from the “Classic Mittens” pattern at Free Vintage Knitting. I knitted them witn 3.5mm (US4) needles, using Cascade 220 Superwash wool. These also have a thumb gusset, and a rounded top for the fingers, which I prefer. I think this will end up being my basic “go-to” mitten pattern, although I might add the purl stitch detail from the previous pattern (or use the Needle Nook pattern but shape the tops as in this pattern).

You are so good! I’ve only knit one mitten so far!
I’ve been looking for a go-to mitten pattern and I saw that Classic Mittens one and planned on trying it this week. I’m glad to hear that it worked out well for you. As for Knit Unto Others, so far I’ve got one pair of mittens, one finished hat and another hat in progress.
You’re really cranking them out!
I LOVE knitting mittens. I’m trying to think of someone can make mittens more popular for knitters to knit. Yours look great!
