After thinking about what to make with my Black Pearl Yarns cashmere from YarnBotanika, I decided to make some wrist warmers, and to design them myself. Since I wanted to be able to wear them while knitting, I didn’t want to have fabric around the thumb or over the palm of my hand. I also wanted something that I could wear as cuffs with a jacket. Because of the green color, I was inspired to do something that looked sort of organic and viney. I wanted the tops to be lacy and flare out a bit so that they could stretch over the wide part of my hands, but I didn’t want a ruffle. I also knew that I wanted to incorporate a spiral rib. While I was on my trip to Philadelphia, I played around with a bunch of different design ideas. In one of my classes, a woman next to me had on a sweater with lace at the edge of the sleeves – it was very much like what I was picturing, and gave me the inspiration I needed to come up with a plan. So while I wasn’t in classes, I was able to spend some time working up a pattern. I ended up re-knitting the first one a couple of times in order to get the wrist section to the size I wanted, and had to make a change to the way I’d planned to decrease at the wrist. The way I’d originally wanted to do it looked nicer (fewer purl stitches in the ribbing), but the wrists were pretty tight, so I had to go a different route. And best of all, I only used half the skein of yarn, so I still have more to play with!
