Techniques: Casting On in Rib
This is just a variation of the long-tail cast-on method. The normal long-tail cast-on produces knit stitches. You can cast on purl stitches by simply working a mirror-image of the normal cast-on. To cast on in rib, cast on either a knit stitch or a purl stitch according to the rib pattern. General instructions for the long-tail cast-on can be found in most knitting reference books, or on the Internet.
Knit stitches: Cast on as usual for the long-tail cast-on
(working from the far left, scoop the needle under and through the
loop on your thumb, then over the left-most strand of the loop on
your index finger, pull the strand back through the thumb loop. Drop
the loop from your thumb and tighten the stitch on the needle).
